Flux analysis

Flux (fluctuation) analysis shows how account balances changed from one period to the next, so you can review and explain variances as part of your close.

Reviewing variances​

The flux view displays period-over-period changes (for example, month over month). For each line, you can see the prior balance, the current balance, and the change.

Assigning and explaining variances​

To turn flux into a review workflow:

  • Assign a variance to a team member, and
  • add an explanation describing what drove the change.

This lets preparers document the "why" behind each significant movement and reviewers confirm it. You can also add review notes to a flux item to ask questions or request more detail.

Filtering the flux view​

In a custom report's flux view, use the Flux filter toggles to narrow the rows:

  • Requires Explanation and No Explanation for rows that need an explanation, with or without one written.
  • Variance for rows whose change exceeds an amount or percentage you enter.
  • Completed, On Track, and Late for the sign-off status of each row. A row is late when someone still needs to sign off and their due date has passed, and on track when sign-offs are outstanding but none is past due.

Standard reports offer the same quick filters as the task lists, including Late and On Track.

Explaining variances with AI​

Rather than start each explanation from scratch, you can have CloseCore draft it for you. On a flux item, AI Analysis reads the transactions on both sides of the comparison, matches them line by line, and writes a concise explanation of the largest dollar drivers — the new, dropped, and changed activity behind the movement. You can then Rewrite the draft with an instruction, Ask AI follow-up questions about the account's ledger, or edit the wording yourself before signing off.

AI never finalizes anything on its own: the generated explanation is a draft that flows into the same assign-and-sign-off review above. See AI variance analysis for the full picture, including generating explanations for a whole report at once.

Requiring explanations automatically​

In custom reports, you can set flux default rules that require an explanation whenever a variance exceeds a threshold you define, so material movements never slip through unexplained.

Combined reports do not support Flux. Open an individual source report to configure Flux defaults, assign variances, add explanations, or sign off.
